The Trustees
A Board of Trustees governs the Hawke’s Bay Helicopter Rescue Trust. The Board oversees the strategic direction and management of the Trust.
The Trustees have been brought together for their considerable experience and skills in relevant fields such as accounting, law, business and community interest.
The Board of Trustees is a volunteer role.

Alison McEwan – Chairman
Alison grew up in Hawkes Bay, and after obtaining her law degree from Otago, returned to practice here. After Alistair (her husband) had a work accident in Mohaka, and was flown to Hawkes Bay Regional Hospital, Alison had no reservations about becoming a trustee. Alison is a partner at Langley Twigg Law, Ahuriri, Napier.
Alistair and Alison have 3 sons, and have remained accident free since September 2007!
Peter Dunkerley – Trustee
Born and educated in the UK Peter arrived in New Zealand in 1967 as part a world trip – and overstayed. It was far too enjoyable living in a kinder climate and a beautiful country. Now over 40 years later with an adult family and a growing number of grandchildren there is no looking back.
Retired from a busy pharmacy life, the District Health Board, Rescue Helicopter and Community Foundation takes up his time. Gardening, classic cars and time to read make a balanced and fulfilling life and there is still time to travel with wife Jane.
Ken Foote – Trustee
ONZM, ED***, BCA, DIP BUS STUD (Dispute Resolution), CA, ACIS, ACCM, AAMINZ
Ken was brought up in Dannevirke and moved to Hastings after completing a Bachelor degree in Commerce and Administration at Victoria University.
He has since worked in a number of finance, business, corporate and senior management positions within Hawke’s Bay as well as his own Management and Mediation Consultancy. He has been in the health sector for five years with his current role being Director of Support Services for the Provider Arm of Hawke’s Bay District Health Board. Apart from leading and managing the Support Services Division, he is required to provide professional planning, management and business support services to Health Services generally and deputise for the Chief Operating Officer.
Ken has recently retired from the NZ Army (Territorial Force) where he last served as Brigadier, Territorial Force Advisor.
Ken is married to Dot and has two adult children.
Michael Jackson – Trustee
John Roil – Trustee
ED* Adv TC, Dip Teaching.
John was born in Hastings and trained as a Fitter Turner and Machinist. He completed his Advanced Trade Certificate and then followed this up with Diploma in Secondary Teaching.
He has worked in many sectors in the community from farming, timber machining, and the accommodation sector and in recent years as the Managing Director of Cottages (NZ) Ltd. A construction business that designs, constructs and delivers transportable buildings.
John has recently retired from the NZ Army (Territorial Force) where he served as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served on 3 Operational Postings with the United Nations in Southern Lebanon, Israel, Peace Monitoring Group in Bougainville and the Stabilisation Force in Bosnia Herzegovina.
He has recently been elected as a Councilor in the local body elections in Hastings. John is married to Rose with two children.
Dr Ross Freebairn – Medical Doctor
Ross has lived in Hawke’s Bay with his family since returning from overseas in August 1995. He is currently Medical Director of Intensive Care Services, Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Clinical Director, Acute Services HBDHB.
He has been involved with the Hawke’s Bay rescue helicopter trust as medical crew since 1995,and has been Medical Director of the Trust since 2002. Ross is Vice President and Censor of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Intensive Care Medicine. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong.
