Tree Trunk Injury After Fall

Napier Mum, Julie Kinloch doesn’t believe in wrapping young boys in cotton wool.

Julie’s son, Callum Johnstone was making the most of his school holidays on a friend’s rural property at Ngatapa, northwest of Napier.  He was playing with two friends near a river when he slipped on a tree trunk.

The 14 year old boy landed on a piece of wood that was embedded in his calf muscle.  His friends managed to help him back to the farm house where emergency services were called and the Ambulance Control Centre responded the Rescue Helicopter.

Callum reached the Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital within one hour of the Rescue Helicopter being activated.  Emergency department staff removed the piece of wood under local anaesthetic and Callum was able to walk, luckily showing no signs of nerve damage.
